About

The time to listen. The passion to fight. The experience to win.

Who I am

From the day in fourth grade I watched my father, a criminal defense attorney, represent a client in a jury trial there has been nothing else I wanted to be. Reaching that goal took years of hard work. I earned a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction and Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After law school, I served as law clerk to the Honorable Ellen Segal Huvelle of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Following the clerkship, I was an associate in the litigation department at Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan, a prominent Washington, DC law firm representing some of the largest corporations in the country.

In 2002, I achieved my dream of following in my father's footsteps when I became a trial attorney with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. There I conducted fact investigations by interviewing witnesses, visiting crime scenes and consulting with expert witnesses. I researched, wrote, argued, and won an array of motions including suppression motions, motions in limine, motions to dismiss, and speedy trial motions. I advocated for clients at sentencing hearings, including preparing witnesses and devising alternatives to incarceration. I represented clients in Montgomery County Adult Drug Court. I also helped teach new attorneys, leading agency-wide training sessions focused on trial skills.

In 2015, I joined the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. As a federal prosecutor, I investigated and prosecuted alleged civil rights violations, including excessive use of force against arrested, detained, and incarcerated persons, hate crimes, and human trafficking. I investigated these offenses by interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and presenting witnesses in grand jury proceedings. Finally, I prepared and took these cases to trial.

In 2017, I returned to the work that inspired me when I was in fourth grade. I opened the Law Office of Adam D. Harris, L.L.C. to serve individuals charged with crimes in state and federal court in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
